The Modern Writer is an independent editorial publication for writers, built around one question: what does it mean to be a writer now, when the tools, the markets, and the paths to readers have all changed faster than the conversation about writing has kept up with?

What we cover

We publish original articles across six areas: writing craft and practice, publishing paths and rights, AI and technology as they actually affect a working writer, the business side of being an author, the practical realities of a sustainable creative life, and the wider culture of books and authorship. Every piece is written to be genuinely useful to someone doing the work, not written to fill a content calendar or chase a trending topic.

Our editorial approach

We aim for writing that's intelligent and curious without being precious about it, and practical without pretending craft doesn't matter. We try to be specific rather than sweeping: fewer confident generalizations, more real tradeoffs laid out clearly enough that a writer can make their own informed decision. Where a question is genuinely unsettled, in publishing law, in AI and copyright, in the future of a given format, we say so rather than manufacturing false certainty.

What this publication is not

The Modern Writer is not built around a single founder's personal brand or life story. Our byline is modular and will carry individual contributor names as they join; where a piece runs under our editorial byline, it reflects the publication's collective approach rather than one person's voice. We don't publish sponsored content dressed up as editorial, we don't manufacture testimonials or success stories, and we don't claim a founding history or set of awards we haven't earned. What you read here is what it is: independent writing about writing, published because it's useful, not because it flatters anyone involved in making it.
